Modern architecture cannot be altogether understood without the dissemination of its images. The blending between photography and architecture proved to be particularly fruitful in constructing the modern visual discourse. Architects became conscious of the full potential of photography beyond its documentary value, and photographers of architecture —architects themselves occasionally—, shortly became important composers and broadcasters of that narrative back into society.
Simultaneously, the discourse on photography has become more and more complex, expanding its scope and surpassing a more traditional approach. XIXth century photographic documentation gradually gave in its way to new forms of exploration of reality, opening a wide range of possibilities and raising photographic and visual culture to a different level. Photographers do not develop their work in a documentary sense as much as they seek to build a new reality perceived in subjective terms. They are involved in creating a new way of understanding the world. There is some consensus —as well as a subtler criticism— on the overflowing of their disciplinary boundaries. Those boundaries seem to be blurred bringing photography closer and closer to visual arts, claiming this way that same autonomy and their own place in the construction of contemporary discourse. The question arises as to whether the relationship between photography and architecture provides new creative processes, not just simple combinations, and whether they affect and experience each other in such a way they bring to light new ways of understanding both fields. These four volumes offer the compilation of the selected papers submitted for the International Conference inter- photography and architecture, that is hold in the Museo Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, November 2016. The event is a joint initiative of the Museum, the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra and also by some members of the Research Project ‘Fotografía y Arquitectura Moderna en España’. One of the major aims of the conference is to overcome the local approach to deep interdisciplinary into the main arguments that allow to comprehend the development of both disciplines: photography and architecture. And it tries to do it attending what results specially from their interactions, interferences, intersections and interpretations. These are precisely the four main topics that hold the lectures and the public presentations, as well as the papers submitted, which are published here in these four volumes, with the aim to become a major reference to study one of the most passionate interdisciplinary relationships of our time.

La arquitectura moderna no podría entenderse obviando la diseminación de sus imágenes. La relación entre fotografía y arquitectura ha resultado especialmente fructífera para la construcción del discurso visual moderno. Los arquitectos han comprendido el potencial de la fotografía, mucho más allá de su valor documental, y el fotógrafo de arquitectura –en ocasiones también arquitecto– se erige como uno de los protagonistas más capaces de redactar esa narrativa y mostrarla a la sociedad.
A su vez, el discurso fotográfico se ha vuelto más complejo, ha ampliado su campo de acción y se escapa de su modo de hacer más tradicional. La documentación fotográfica, propia del siglo XIX, ha ido dejando paso progresivamente a nuevas formas de exploración de la realidad, abriendo un abanico desconocido con nuevas posibilidades y elevando la práctica fotográfica y la cultura visual a nuevas cotas. Los fotógrafos no desarrollan ya su obra únicamente de modo documental, sino que en ocasiones pretenden construir una realidad que se presenta desde una visión mucho más personal y subjetiva. Participan y crean el mundo. Existe un cierto consenso, igual que una crítica velada, sobre el exceso de sus límites disciplinares, que a menudo se diluyen y aproximan la práctica fotográfica a las artes plásticas, reclamando por tanto esa misma autonomía y su lugar propio en la conformación del pensamiento contemporáneo. Cabe preguntarse en qué medida las relaciones entre fotografía y arquitectura proporcionan procesos creativos nuevos, no meras combinaciones, y de qué modo se afectan y se experimentan mutuamente. Estos cuatro volúmenes recogen una selección de las comunicaciones recibidas el Congreso Internacional titulado inter- fotografía y arquitectura, que tiene lugar en el Museo Universidad de Navarra en el mes de noviembre de 2016 como resultado de una iniciativa conjunta del propio Museo, de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Navarra y de algunos de los miembros del Proyecto de Investigación Fotografía y Arquitectura Moderna en España. Uno de los objetivos principales del congreso es precisamente superar el ámbito local para bucear interdisciplinarmente en los argumentos esenciales que han permitido desarrollar conjuntamente cada una de ambas disciplinas: fotografía y arquitectura. Y en especial, atendiendo a los aspectos que resultan de sus interacciones, interferencias, intersecciones e interpretaciones. Son precisamente esos cuatro bloques temáticos los que articulan tanto las conferencias y presentaciones públicas, como el conjunto de artículos académicos recibidos, que se editan aquí en cuatro volúmenes con la esperanza de convertirse en una aportación relevante que ayude a comprender en profundidad una de las relaciones interdisciplinares más apasionante de nuestra época.
