Archeological Center in Cártama, Málaga, Spain

The project aims not only to protect a beautiful archeological site –as requested– but to expand its centrality in the city by providing a public and gathering space to the community. Past and present can coexist now in a quiet dialogue, where a textured materiality and a clear geometry define a lasting framework. The definition of a clear boundary in its perimeter allows the ruins to be framed, protected and enhanced. The program is then compacted within that boundary, with the minimum footprint and impact, and allowing its roof to become an extension of the public streets. A controlled sequence of interior and exterior spaces offers the opportunity to visit the museum and its ruins nearly simultaneously, as well as navigating up through the site close to the roman structures. A new public square is created at the entrance, and an expressive concrete frame allows contemporary and informal public activities to quietly inhabit the silent richness and history of the place.
