Open Market and Cultural Center, Sanxenxo

There is always a strong connection between open markets and their neighborhoods. They become catalyzers for the social fabric at the very core of nearly every European historic city. They provide the opportunity to define a space which is clearly defined by the trade exchange but specially by a fulfilling social enrichment.
This project is not about defining a building, but a social gathering space which extends to become also a cultural center. The volume carefully reacts to the built environment, to close the block and stablish a close relationship with its surroundings. The street levels opens itself completely to allow new connections from the upper to the lower streets, in defining an interior public square. The volume floats on top, hosting several public spaces which are carved within the solid wooden mass.

Mercado Municipal y Centro Cultural, Sanxenxo

Los mercados han mantenido históricamente una estrecha relación con la ciudad, su desarrollo y morfología. Han actuado de motor económico y conformado el tejido urbano y social en todas las culturas, al aire libre una vez por semana y después en los albores del siglo XIX en arquitecturas cubiertas que ahora han evolucionado a espacios más contemporáneos de tipo social, gastronómico e incluso lúdico. Son lugares de intercambio y sociabilidad, y parte de una “ecología urbana”. El objetivo de la propuesta es, por tanto, propiciar una buena relación urbana. Mediante operaciones sencillas con los cerramientos se diluyen los límites entre el interior y el exterior, se generan espacios exteriores cubiertos, existe una gran permeabilidad. En plantas superiores se plantea un programa de distintos usos cívicos, con el máximo de flexibilidad y versatilidad. Se dotan de luz natural extendiendo los patios interiores del edificio vecino, resolviendo la integración del volumen en la manzana. La propuesta puede entenderse como una calle o plaza cubierta por un edificio flexible y versátil.
