Public Library Las Tablas, Madrid

"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." (Marcus Tullius Cicero) The library type has undergone a radical transformation in recent decades. Libraries have evolved from mere containers of diverse objects to cultural and civic centers with an important urban and public component. New technologies and new media have forced to rethink these buildings more as cultural and exchange infrastructures than a simple storage space. Paradoxically we still identify libraries with these classical typologies. The library continues to be the support for communities by assuring their access to culture and education. So, will the libraries disappear? Probably not, and we hope so. The printed book, even with its evolving condition is still today one of the most powerful man-made artifacts and libraries define and represent who we are as a society. In the meantime, can we have both library and garden to merge? That is probably all we need.

Biblioteca Municipal en Las Tablas, Madrid

“Si cerca de la biblioteca tenéis un jardín, ya no os faltará de nada”. (Marco Tulio Cicerone) El modelo de biblioteca ha sufrido una transformación radical en las últimas décadas. Han pasado de ser meros contenedores de materiales a custodiar a centros culturales o cívicos. Las nuevas tecnologías y los nuevos soportes culturales han obligado a repensarlas más como infraestructuras culturales y de intercambio que como aquellos espacios clásicos de almacenamiento. Aunque paradójicamente todavía las relacionamos con esas tipologías clásicas. La biblioteca continúa siendo el soporte de la política cultural, ofreciendo formatos distintos y, lo más importante, garantizando su acceso a nuestras sociedades. ¿Desaparecerá entonces la biblioteca? Seguramente no. El libro es aun hoy el más potente artefacto creado por el hombre y las bibliotecas definen y representan lo que somos como sociedad. ¿Asistiremos a la biblioteca sin lugar? Mientras, ¿podremos colmar la biblioteca con el jardín y con ello todas nuestras aspiraciones, como aseguraba Cicerón?
